The Perfect Pine Hutch

I got this hutch from my neighbor last summer as a trade after doing some work for her in her house. She was cleaining out the side yard so her son told her about these cupboards I was selling on Craigslist during my garage renovation, and asked how much she could buy them for. I was thrilled, because I had seen this hutch she had covered out there and knew she planned on getting  rid of it.  I asked if she would like to work out a trade instead. I was so excited when she said yes!! We felt like we were both winning out on this one, I love it when that happens! So my husband and I took it home and it sat in my dining room feeling too big and not quite right for months.

I had a little bit of a dilemma with making it work in my space. It felt so big and over-bearing.
After posting it on my Facebook page and collecting some opinions while finding some pinterest inspiration, I decided on the style I wanted to paint it. But I still couldn’t get myself to do it. It was then that I realized I needed to sell it. So I did. I went through a seller’s remorse, wondering if I made a mistake. It was then that I started looking for a more suitable hutch on craigslist. I found this cute pine hutch for less than half of what I sold the other one for. It was obviously worth less, but I felt it was more suitable….

Till I brought it home and set it in the old hutch’s place.

This one seemed to be too small and looked funny next to the big spacious table. I started to wonder if I’d made yet another mistake.
Then I suffered buyer’s remorse.

Resolved to selling this new hutch, I decided to go ahead and paint it and then sell it for more than I bought it for. Then I could start searching again for the perfect hutch. So I mixed up some homemade chalk paint (using a recipe I found on Confessions of a Serial DIYer) with a paint sample from Behr of  Stealth Jet, distressed it with 150 grit sandpaper, and gave it a coat of clear wax.
After replacing the knobs with some crystal ones I bought for an excellent deal at our local thrift store, I felt satisfied with the look. Now it is exactly what I envisioned and am thinking I don’t want to sell it anymore, because to me, it turned out to be the perfect pine hutch!
And, I love the way it looks with our new bead board wainscotting.  More on that later cause for now, I have a couple curtain panels to sew!
