This is truly one of my favorite days of the whole month!! For those of you that are new to Project Challenge, I will briefly explain what it is:

I took this month’s opportunity to do a long awaited project in my 13 year old boy’s room.
When my 4th son got his own room at the beginning of the school year, he told me that it would also be the guest room when we needed a place for guests to sleep, since his getting his own room meant that we wouldn’t have a spare bedroom anymore. He was very patient about my finding the time to make it his own.
He lived with flower decals and Frozen Blue walls for months.
(sweet, patient thing!)
After my spending a great deal of time working on and decorating the girls’ room, he patiently asked me when it would be his turn. I still have yet to share either of their rooms, but for this month’s project challenge I really wanted to share the last project I did to complete his. The motivation for completely completing this room, was my brother and his family coming out to visit for the first time. I have a tendency to want to go on to the next project when one gets too challenging or I get bored working on something. I’m sorry to admit, it takes an extra motivational push to get me to completely finish something.
I have to say, though, that never happened on this one since the whole thing was a lot of fun.
Now, let’s get to it, shall we?
I started out with these closet doors to work with.

I’m not sure if it was the missing louvers, the nail polish paint, or the derailed door that triggered the desire to improve these poor pathetic closet covers. You can play eeny meeny miney moe on this one (my solution for any take your pick type of deal…ask any of my local Wal-Mart clerks…hehe!)
To start with, my husband and I reinstalled the derailed door.
Then made chalkboard panels using a 1/4″ piece of plywood. It was a scrap piece from the garage I think somebody gave to me. It was rather dirty and damaged, so after we cut them down to size, they got a really good sanding and a couple coats of chalkboard paint.
As you can see, I mounted them over the louver panels on the closet using my brad nailer, a tool I seriously use just as much, if not more, than my hammer!
Next, I had my son pick a molding he liked to trim out the edges. This really gives them a finished look while adding character and style.
I painted and mitered the edges of the trim before I applied them with my brad nailer.
Next, I filled in the holes and evened out some rough patches with drywall mud we have leftover from renovating the master bathroom (more on that later!).
To be honest, if I were to do it again, I would have done this before adding the trim since touch ups would have been a lot fewer if I had.
Then I painted the panels with another coat of chalkboard paint to finish the job.
Last, I added these fun knobs I found for 1/2 price at Hobby Lobby.
I love the jewelry of a project!
After the jewelry, they were complete.
We both love them so much, and now the girls want me to make some for their closet doors. I plan to, since they love to play school and this would be the perfect way to add a chalkboard to their room too.
It was fun to come in the other night and see that
my boy had written his schedule on his closet door!
I added a few messages of my own to him as well.
I have to say again, that this project was really a LOT of fun!

Michelle, I assumed you just painted the panels, but NOOOOO you actually took out the shutter panels and really build this….I Love Love Love this!!! Such a great idea!

I was wondering what the doors led to in the thumbnail. This is perfect for a kid's room! I can see so many applications for this… thanks for the inspiration.

His daily schedule cracked me up, so organized already! Fun makeover on the doors, and its something that will grow with him through the years.

I'm thinking that would be a great idea Jeanette! If I painted the door in room the same, my husband and I could write messages back and forth. Not a bad idea!!

You're right Audra! I was pretty impressed with his schedule…lol! I think it will actually be helpful in the future for planning and messages. I need one in my room!
